Greater Raleigh Area Kappa League receives generous gift.

Kappa Charitable Trust Fund was awarded donation of $10,000 from the Ruth and Evelyn Pope Trust to support the Greater Raleigh Area Kappa League and the Educational Initiatives of the Raleigh Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. The Ruth and Evelyn Pope Trust has historical African American roots in Raleigh, NC. Its’ namesake Evelyn Bennett and Ruth Permelia were the daughters of Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope, a prominent African-American physician, political figure and businessman . Dr. Pope was a graduate of Leonard Medical School. The Leonard Medical School, established in Raleigh by Shaw University in 1880, was the first four-year medical school in the United States and trained more than 400 Black and African American physicians during the nearly 40 years of its existence. Dr. Pope was one of the first licensed African-American doctors in North Carolina. He was also the only African-American to run for mayor of a Southern capital during the Jim Crow Era. Dr. Pope and his wife Delia Haywood Phillips have had a lasting impact on the African American community in Raleigh felt across generations.
